This task proved to be a bit of a challenge due to the level of the existing driveway. We got to work building up the foundation and adding utilities. Once the structure was in place, we finished the exterior with siding, windows and lighting. The real fun came on the interior, though. Multi-Generational Accessory Dwelling Unit in McLean

We were tasked with designing and building a two-story rear/side independent living Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) for our homeowners in McLean.

The site itself presented an engineering challenge as the structure had to be built right to the edge of setbacks. We also had to excavate into a hill to accommodate services, trash cans and a path to the backyard.

Once these challenges were met, we got to work designing the interior. On the first floor the kitchen, dining room, and living room blend together into one large cohesive space. The open-floor plan provides an abundance of sunlight, promotes greater traffic flow and gives the illusion of more space. Oak flooring throughout unifies these common areas. Traditional white cabinetry, grey granite countertops, neutral paint and French doors make the space feel bright and airy.

A full bathroom, complete with walk-in shower and a laundry closet complete the first floor layout.

The second floor contains the master bedroom, guest room/den and a shared full bath complete with bathtub. The floor is accessed by the staircase at the front entrance. The large windows throughout allow for maximum sunlight.

The addition is accessed off the driveway offering independence from the main house as well as promoting security. Both a plus for multi-generational living.

Multi-Use Finished Basement in Clifton

With a goal of creating room for extended guest stays and secondary living, we got to work designing this multi-use space for our homeowners in Clifton.

The challenge was maximizing the layout while working around the existing staircase and low ceilings. To give the space a larger feel, we minimized the number of walls and used flooring instead to define the different areas. This laid back hangout includes a tv area, den/bedroom, full bath, workout area, game room, and kitchenette all with the a retro "Route 66" design...space the entire family can enjoy.

For the main floor, we painted the concrete with an epoxy coating system with deco flakes. Often used in garages, the flooring is both stylish and durable. Commercial grade carpet was used on the staircase as well as for the game room and den.

Basic light grey lower cabinets with a tall pantry form the kitchenette. Pietra Cordosa sandstone was used for the countertop. A large stainless utility sink and lighted hanging sign complete the look.

The full bath features a light grey vanity with integrated white sink and countertop. Subway tiles were used on the shower walls with a dark grey grout. A rain head, vertical drain and floating shelves along with "concrete" tile on the shower pan and floor give the bathroom a rustic, industrial vibe.

The highlight of the space has to be the reclaimed weathered red barn wood used as an accent wall behind the television and the game room nook. The same wood along with corrugated metal was used to create the custom barn door...a true statement piece.

In the end, we were able to expand our homeowners viable living space while increasing the value of their home in the process.

Open Floor Plan & Addition in Fairfax

Our clients purchased their home in Fairfax knowing they would eventually want to open up the floor plan. They came to us with a vision of incorporating the galley kitchen, dining room and family room into an open concept design. This required building a small addition on the back of the home.

The transitional kitchen is now the heart of the home. The oversized, Seaside Blue island is the true focal point of the room. Schrock white shaker custom cabinets surround the perimeter with a quartz Calacatta Venice countertop throughout. The glass and marble mosaic backsplash ties everything together. The reach-in pantry and drop zone provide extra storage for the family.

The back of the home was extended with the addition of a new den and home office. We connected the addition by removing the existing sliding door which allowed for a double doorway. This helped us achieve the open floor plan the family was seeking.

This family of four is sure to enjoy their new space for years to come.

Deck and Gazebo Create to Expand Outdoor Living

We loved working with these homeowners again to create a backyard oasis at their home in Fairfax. After completing their sunroom addition the year prior, they asked us to build a deck and gazebo to further expand their outdoor living.

First, we installed a new multi-level Trex deck with space to eat and cook all summer long. The built-in wrap around bench provides extra seating for large family gatherings. With shade in mind, the design is anchored by a new gazebo which mimics the exterior of the home. A real focal point with a color-blocked tile floor and lighted ceiling fan, the space provides an area for the family to rest and relax.

We then poured the over-sized concrete patio. With its neutral color and scoring detail, the patio is as beautiful as it is versatile. Surrounded by well-placed native grasses, ivy and flowering plants, the look is complete.

Creating a modern, spa-inspired primary bathroom in Aldie

By removing the soaking tub and creating a new entrance to the walk-in closet, we were able to maximize the existing square footage.

The focal point of the space is the large walk-in steam shower, complete with multiple shower heads, built-in slate bench and storage shelves. Pebble stack-stone on the walls and mosaic tile on the shower pan, all in soothing grey tones, gives the space a natural but modern feel.

The double vanity is made up of Decora walnut custom cabinetry and a Silestone "Suede and Volcano" Charcoal Soapstone. With deep center drawers, open shelving and a countertop reach-in, this bathroom has more than enough storage.

The teak feature wall with built-in shadow boxes, floating shelves and wood bench complete the look of this modern wellness retreat.

Multi-Generational Home for Our Fairfax Homeowners

Multi-generational homes are becoming more and more popular. When our homeowners in Fairfax needed a space for Gramma they contacted TCB to build an in-law suite addition. The project also involved remodeling the interior of the existing home to add an additional bedroom for the kids and updating the kitchen for the entire family to enjoy.

We came up with a plan to bump out the front of the home to accommodate a second master suite with full bath, sitting area and walk-in closet. The separate entrance, conveniently located next to the front door, provides privacy and independence.

Next, we reconfigured the basement to add a bedroom and remodeled the existing bathroom. Custom maple wood grain cabinets were selected for the vanity and wall cabinet. An artic White quartz countertop with 4" backsplash, under-mount white sink and polished chrome fixtures compliment this neutral palette. For the wainscoting wall and tub tile 3 x 12 beveled light grey "mist" tile was chosen with a custom glass tub enclosure. Polished grey 12 x 24 plank floor tiles brings the whole look together.

In the kitchen, the goal was to create a more open layout for the growing family. White shaker painted white custom cabinets helped to transform this dated kitchen. The grey, leathered granite countertop offers style and a unique textured finish. For the full backsplash, 3 x 6 grey ceramic pumice tile was selected. A freestanding cabinet with bench houses the refrigerator and serves as a utility closet and drop zone. A pantry was created next to the existing fireplace with a custom broad shaker maple morel built-in cabinet.

Transitional Farmhouse Bringing the Outside In

Our homeowners were looking for a transitional farmhouse for their new construction on the shores of Lake Jackson. After taking the original home down to the foundation, we got to work constructing this 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath stunner.

This beautiful, one-story home is finished with neutral colors on the exterior, allowing it to naturally blend into the surroundings. Custom roof millwork, black iron windows and wood and glass entry door with sidelights compliment the look.

On the interior, coziness is key. The inviting foyer features a beautiful inlaid tile floor. Wide plank rustic hickory plank flooring is used throughout the home.

Two bedrooms and a full bath are accessed through an oversized barn door off the foyer. The powder room features a floating concrete vanity and vessel bowl sink.

Continue on the fabulous great room, which features a stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and access to the wrap around deck overlooking the lake. Craftsman wood windows and doors and to the warmth of the home.

The kitchen is truly the heart of this home, anchored by the large island that houses the six burner cooktop. Custom Schrock antiqued cabinetry and Calcutta quartz countertops are used throughout. The stone tile used on the front of the island and backsplash complete the look.

The master bedroom sits at the back of the room to allow for views of the lake. Access the deck through the double French doors. A large walk-in closet and master bath rounds out the master suite.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with our clients to build their dream home in Loudoun County. With a total of 2,500 square feet, 3 bedrooms, and 2.5 bathrooms, this custom home was designed for comfort. This started with a single story design with a bonus room over the garage. A transitional farmhouse style was achieved with a gabled roof line, navy vertical siding and covered porch and lanai. Stylish black windows and doors, white trim and gable brackets completed the homes exterior. The look continued on the interior with a vaulted ceiling, custom wood beams, shiplap feature walls, barn door, vintage-style lighting, and a neutral color palette. With a focus on natural materials like wood, metal, and stone, this home is both cozy and stylish.

Blending Metal Finishes adds Warmth and Depth to this Primary Bath

Our homeowners in Clifton were hoping to achieve a modern farmhouse look in their primary bath. For the layout the goal was to increase the size of the shower, counter and storage. We were able to do this by turning the direction of the existing shower, removing a built-in linen closet and replacing the built-in alcove tub.

To achieve the modern farmhouse vibe, we installed Providence Bianco wood plank tile on the floor. A Silestone Calcutta Gold top and Shrock shaker semi-custom cabinets make up the vanity and provide for ample storage. The large walk-in shower includes a barn door style shower door. Modern meringue matte subway tiles were used on the wall and Carrara marble trellis. tile on the shower pan. Skyline Carrara marble in the niche was repeated on the vanity backsplash.

Mixed metals were used throughout with brushed nickel Kohler fixtures, Amerock matte black cabinet pulls, matte black hardware and a mixture of the two for the sconces.

A Classic, Chic and Timeless Black and White Interior

Our homeowners chose to go with the classic black and white color scheme throughout their home in Lorton. The beauty of using black and white is that the palette is flexible and can look modern or classic.

The kitchen features a mixture of black and white Schrock shaker cabinets and white Siletstone countertops. Black paint on the sink wall, a black custom hood and black floor to ceiling display cabinets bring the whole look together.

A Modern Primary Suite with a Vintage Touch

We worked with our homeowner to build an Addition on her home in Springfield. Creating a much needed primary suite and additional living space was just what this quaint bungalow needed.

The primary bathroom was the focus of the project. The mission was to create a modern feel while keeping the charm of the home. The space features a floating vanity in crisp white with a wood top, full height glass tile backsplash and open shelving exposing the brick exterior of the original home.

By placing the freestanding tub inside the walk-in shower we made the most of the space. The curbless design creates a level surface, allowing for a seamless transition directly from the bathroom floor into the shower. Multiple shower heads including a rain shower and glass partition complete this spa retreat.

To make the kitchen feel less isolated, we widened the walk-way creating the allusion of open-concept. We installed new 3” wide oak floors in the study, dining and family rooms along with custom millwork including crown moulding and wood cased openings.

The kitchen features painted white Schrock Denton Maple custom cabinets and dark soapstone countertops on the perimeter. The island was basically the reverse with a dark finish on the cabinetry and a light marble top. A marble octagon tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances, fireclay farmhouse sink and commercial retractable faucet provided the finishing touches.

For the buffet area in the study we used dark mitered custom cabinetry with floating wine shelves and built-in wine fridge In the powder room we installed an antique white mitered custom vanity, granite countertop and coordinating tile flooring.

With well-appointed finishes, custom carpentry and impeccable decorations, this kitchen, dining, family room remodel turned out beautifully.

Project Description

For our homeowner in rural Prince William County, the design and integration of this detached garage was limited only by the imagination. Focusing on the purpose for which it was intended—a workshop with finished office and storage space above—we provided 3D photo quality designs allowing the homeowner to get a true interpretation of the end product along with all the details.

Although the structure was a good distance from the main residence, we shaped the building to be similar in appearance and design. With the same roof contours and design aesthetics we were able to add appeal along with an increase in property value.

French doors open to the partially covered patio complete with tongue in groove ceiling, decorative columns and flagstone pavers. The brick work detail, arched windows and black shutters mimic the exterior of the main home.

Whatever the use, a detached garage is an opportunity to create an attractive piece of architecture with secondary living space as an added bonus!

In this bungalow style home in Annandale, our homeowners wanted to update their kitchen and open it up to their living room. This also allowed for an increase in the footprint of the kitchen. Better organization, enhanced access for hard-to-reach areas, and increased functionality were key factors in the layout of the kitchen. The Schrock white maple shaker custom cabinetry includes wide drawers, base trash, pull-outs, cutlery space, and a corner lazy-susan. In addition to providing counter seating for two, the island provides double-sided storage as well as a spot for the wine fridge. The custom built-in bench with tile topped side table becomes the perfect drop zone for keys and electronics. From a design standpoint, the goal was to retain antique charm while mixing in clean lines and simple styling. This cozy kitchen pairs whites and off-whites with light-gray colors and elegant embellishments. The simplicity of this light color palette compliments other colors used in the home as well as the more decorative details such as the patterned, gray granite countertops, Whisper White Arabesque tile backsplash with gray grout,, antique chandelier light fixture and charming distressed pantry door. This modern cottage kitchen proves renovating a small space can still have a big (and stylish) impact!

Our homeowners in Oakton asked us to transform their master bathroom into a soothing spa. With the bathroom being rather large and original to the home, we got right to work redesigning the space. We knew we wanted to make the existing fireplace a focal point. By raising it up we were able to accommodate a sleek, symmetrical soaking tub. We made it a true feature by finishing the wall in a natural, stacked stone, complete with a slate ledge. The see-through fireplace opens to the bedroom for additional hours of enjoyment. Opposite the tub is the massive walk-in shower with ceiling mounted rain head shower. The space is a true stunner with the continuation of the stacked stone, slate bench and mosaic niche. The Decora custom cabinets in Maxwell (Gray) Maple with a Shadow Finish give the unique appearance of suede. Numerous base cabinets and over-sized drawers provide this couple with plenty of storage. Square, under-mount sinks, sleek fixtures and bronze sconces complete the look. In designing a second-story addition, our goal at Thomas Custom Builders is to make it look like it was there from the beginning. In this case, we added to the existing family room at the back of the house. We also added a dormer to the front of the home to accommodate space on the landing for a second closet. Both the master and secondary closet feature beautiful, custom, built in cabinetry. The spacious master bedroom opens to a covered deck through double French doors. Thomas Custom Builders worked with our homeowners in Alexandra, Virginia to build a second story master suite addition. Incorporating unfinished attic space, we were able to add architectural interest to both the interior and exterior of the project. A great deal of the design credit goes to our clients that ultimately placed their vision all across their home! In the master bedroom we designed the roofline to allow for a vaulted ceiling, making the room feel open and airy. An electric fireplace provides ambiance as well as warmth during the winter months. The three, large windows supply plenty of daylight and offer unobstructed views of the backyard. Although space was limited, we were able to provide style and function in the master bathroom. The custom espresso brown vanity with dual sinks, drawers and lower shelf gives the furniture look our clients were seeking. Wall sconces, recessed lighting and two awning windows provide an abundance of light. The oversized shower with ocean blue tiles complete the look. The design also included a spacious walk-in closet. Custom built-ins and ledges provide ample storage and the closet can be accessed directly from the bedroom or the bathroom. The cantilevered area on the front of the house created a small alcove for a second laundry room for the family. The master suite is accessed by a new beautiful staircase from the existing first floor living room, which we also updated with new doors and millwork. Lastly, we finished the exterior of the addition with new vinyl siding to match the homes existing wood siding. We also added a side porch and flagstone patio with red brick border. Your attic can be a treasure trove of unused space. Tucked away from the rest of the house, they can provide a birds eye view of the outside world. All American Addition in Northern Virginia

We completed a full second story addition and rear great room on this home in Falls Church, VA with a new master suite and two additional bedrooms and a master bath with wet room and an additional bath plus a playroom and laundry room. The addition was designed with a pitched roof allowing for a vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom and the new great room. The master bedroom opens to a second floor covered porch, complete with glass railing and lighted ceiling fan. The spa-like master bath features an oversized, free-standing tub with floor to ceiling slate stacked-stone backsplash. The curbless shower and wet room helps this modern bathroom feel light and airy. We also remodeled the gourmet first floor kitchen, which is anchored by this stunning granite island with seating for four. Custom Schrock cabinets and a dramatic tile backsplash make this oversized kitchen feel warm and cozy. In the great room, we added a two-sided fireplace for indoor/outdoor use. The incredible back patio is sure to be a gathering spot for this family for many years to come! At Thomas Custom Builders, we love the challenge of designing a second story addition.
